Point to Point Network Bridge not working with WPA2-PSK/AES

I am trying to bridge two parts of my Windows 10/7 network using a Netgear WN203 (v2.0) and a Netgear WN604 (V3.02).

The side with Internet access has the WN203.

I have set the Wifi channel to 13 and enabled the 1-1 Bridge Mode with open channel.

The non-internet side has the WN203. The IP address has been change to 192.168.0.101

I have set the Wifi channel to 13 and enabled the 1-1 Bridge Mode with open channel here too.

The Wifi MAC address of each access point has been entered as the remote of the other.

The configuration works and allows the access points to be pinged over the bridge in both directions.

Internet access is now also present on both parts of the network.

I was expecting each side of the bridge to connect only with the device with the specified remote MAC address.  However, by trying each access point in turn at the internet side of the network, I was able to use the bridge wifi signal to get internet access on my phone.

I therefore attempted to set up WPA2-PSK/AES security in both Security and Bridge menus, on both devices.

Even after resetting both devices, neither appeared to connect with the other, and it was no longer possible to ping the corresponding access point over the bridge.

I then tried each access point in isolation at the internet side of the network and was able to get internet access on my phone using the SSID and pass phrase.

So using WPA2-PSK/AES in 1-1 bridge mode, the two access points will connect to a phone, but not to each other. Anyone have any ideas?

Can't answer the complete question, except of this:

Simultaneous bridge and client association is intentional - in fact it's a feature, certainly on the WN604. The MAC addresses are purely for the point-to-point resp. point-to-multipoint WDS connections (max four), and don't limit the AP functionality. To configure more access controls for the wireless AP mode, head to Configuration > Security > Advanced > MAC Authentication.
