FS105 switch died
Hello:
I have a FS105 switch that just died (everything on it disconnects from the network after times ranging from 20 minutes to 24 hours or so until I unplug and replug it in). Connected a D-Link switch and the problem goes away so I am sure it is the switch. I am curious how long the FS105 lasted. I found a spec on it that the mean time to failure is 40 years or so. I am not sure when I bought it, but it is surely nowhere near that old - and yes, I understand mean time to failure does NOT mean it should last 40 years... still that seems a bit extravagant. Is there a way to find out the manufacturing date. It is far older than any receipt I kept for it.
I am finding my aging Netgear switches are failing regularly now, but my D-link switches, many far older, are still going strong. So, I am trying to track lifetimes... just curious.

The MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is a calculated statistical number. Of course, it can give some ideas about the expected lifetime however. Some devices can last always "forever" while others can fail during warranty, after a few years, while some can last decades. Factors are the environment (temperature, humidity, condensation, power availability/continuity/voltage/overvoltage e.g during thunderstorms, user behavior like on/off cycles, and many more).
The MTBF number is used for risk of failure calculations of complete networks for example.

Any input on the manufacturing date or how to determine it?

Kindly send me through PM the SN of your switch, I might be able to check with that. FS105 was release around 2000s.
