Netgear XS508M question
Hi. I've been looking at buying two XS508Ms, but I've found out that the model is end of life and are no longer being manufactured. They're quite a big unit for just 9 (inc SFP+) ports. Does anyone know if NG are planning on releasing a newer, more compact 8 port 10gbe switch in the coming months at all? I've heard that the equivalent TP-Link (TL-SX1008) has a fan and can get quite noisy.
I do love NG products and am loyal to them but I just can't wait forever. I've just bought an MS510TXM.

I have a NG GS348 for cable to rooms where devices use 1GB or less, and I have an XS508M to rooms with 2.5G devices in the house - the XS508M works great. I have had it for 9 months now, when Comcast bumped our service up to 2G.

Similar enclosure with the built-in power supply is also available as a XS516M, figure...

Netgear won't publish any informtion about future products.
10 GbE/MultiGig switches are more challenging for cooling than the tinly GbE or 2.5 GbE MultiGig swiches, since more energy is required to power the max. 100 meter long cabling -and- the switch core itself - especially since all these switches are 19" rack mountable, which is even more challenging for the airflow required..

Equivalent? You are comparing here an 8 port 10 MultiGig switch (power draw of up to ~33 W to drive the max 100 meter Ethernet cable length) and a 200 Gbps bandwidth (non-blocking, full duplex) switching capacity with a 8 port GbE switch, ~6.5 W power, and a switch bandwidth of 16 Gbps.
No idea why such a tiny GbE switch as you are comparing here should require an (always audible, but usually not noisy if operated clean enough) fan. However, some people are unhappy about switches with fans, since there is always certain low noise pressure.
Netgear offers various similar small GbE switches -without- fans, tough, with external power supplies.
Keep in mind, there is very low demand worldwide for unanaged 10 GbE/MultiGig switches, since common modern networks require comprehensive IGMP Multicast support for IPTV, video, audio applications, and typically also VLAN support, too.
