XS505M and GS110MX and 10Gb SFP and Apple TV Problem

Hi,

I have a XS505M that I'm curious who can recommend the best branded and model# 10Gb SFP to RJ45 transceiver for this model switch?

I have a Cable Matters branded 10Gb SFP to RJ45 transceiver now and I'm seeing a problem when I have it installed in the XS switch and the CAT6A STP cable running from the XS switch to a GS110MX connected to it's 10Gb port, if I have a Apple TV connected to the GS110MX switch, streaming begins for about a minute the stops. Then all internet and IP addressing services on this segment of the network stop working. I have to power cycle the XS switch to get all services back up and running.

I found that if I connected the GS switch to a ethernet port on the XS switch, the problem doesn't reproduce. I can only presume there is a problem at the SFP transceiver or the XS switch when using the SFP transceiver in this configuration.

Any brand and model recommendations to try something different to help narrow this down would be greatly appreciated.

  • Ok I think I figured this one out.

I got the new tranceivers in. I plugged the ipolex SFP one first.

Played the movie and about 6  minutes the movie stopped again and ATV reported that it lost internet access. WIred PC also reported no internet.

So I did the following. Moved the GS switch connection to the SFP port on the XS switch and the 2.5Gb connection from the RBRE960 to ethernet port #1 on the XS switch. Power cycled the XS switch and then restarted the movie on ATV. I played successfully for over 30 mintues. I stopped it and played a different movie for a while and it worked aswell.

    Summary:

    RBRE960 2.5Gb port > XS505M SFP > XS505M Ethernet 10Gb port > GS110MX Ethernet 10Gb port < ATV fails

    RBRE960 2.5Gb port > XS505M Ethernet port > XS505M SFP 10Gb port > GS110MX 10Gb Ethernet port < ATV works

I guess I'm learning as I go. Internesting for the one configuration wth the ATV that cause all this to happen.

If anything has ideas or thoughts about this...All ears.

  • Haven't over-stressed the possible maximum link length?

We're talking of an industry standard here when it comes to the SFP ports. The practical implementation difference is caused by the limited power available. Two different chip-sets allow about 30 meters or 55 meters implementations.

Few device vendors require appropriate coding of the SFP modules, so make, model can be key for some installations, non-compatible (those not carrying  an expected brand or model in the flash data) are not allowed.

      Everything is well under 30m.

In normal placement the XS switch is in the main electronics closet up stairs, then runs right down stairs to the main level on same wall where the GS switch is located in the living room. No more than 20-25 est feet distance.

This is the transceiver I got back in June:

Possible this may not meet or be compatible with the XS switch. I do see other brands mentioning NG and other switch mfr names as being compatible. I also see 10Gb speed only SFPs and multi gig SFPs which seem to cost a bit more. I see NG has a SFP to ethernet however seems to be overly prices IMO.

Original label modules are (massively) overpriced. However depending on the brand and the customer, massive discounts apply. It's kind of a unserious business (rip-off) practice.

While talking, heat can be an issue on small device enclosures for exaple the GS110EMX and 110MX when using copper ethernet modules.
