FVS-318N; FVS-318Gv2 and Arris
User SamirD may have found a correlation in this long saga of the FVS-318N and FVS-318Gv2 not managing a cold boot. It may have something to do with being connected to an Arris modem; one easy 'fix' ...

Very interesting that a router in between is getting these units working correctly.
And it's not the cable modem, but the configuration of the head-end equipment by the isp, typically made by Arris.
Does anyone have a Frys nearby? This $20 managed switch might be able to act as the filter and allow the 318G to work normally:
Or order it from newegg:
These managed switches should be able to 'filter' the packets even if they aren't using any other managed switch options. Cheap fix to the problem.

I am having this exact issue and I am behind a netgear CM600 (cable modem). I am running the latest firmware on the router 4.3.4-2.
So, apparently I need another router to go inbetween my cable modem and my VPN router? That's not conveinent at all...

I aggree it is silly to need a intermediate device.
I am almost half-inclined to just replace the thing with something that actually works...

That is exactly what I did, got another firewall; the ZyXEL VFG6005N is a magnificent unit, although the last firmware was 2012
Is a switch enough or does the FVS-318 need to sit behind a router?

Keep in mind that this 'in between device' issue isn't the first time I've seen this issue, nor is it just on a Netgear device. The first time I saw it was on a Cisco rv016. It can happen.

You can get them for (relatively) cheap, then I just need switches on the network to connect devices. I am looking at an open sourced one too, so I am sure any software bugs will get fixed because it is open to the community.
