fvs318n - Internet working only for wifi users

Hi there,

Afters some attempts trying to get everything to work with my new fvs318n vpn firewall I do find a very odd internet access problem.

For some reason my wireless devices do not have any problem connecting to internet but in the other hand all the users that are directly connected to the firewall do not have internet access.

To make things just a bit more funny, all the computers without internet can use all related google services (gmail,searchs,etc ...) but not any other web-site also if you try to ping or do a trace route to any box on the internet it does seem to work correctly.

I do have the latest firmware also have done a hard reset several times, also ensured that there are no firewall rules causing the problem ( I don't have any!).

Any ideas or thoughts about what the problem can be will be really appreciated!

Thanks, Javier. :o

  • This thread is old, but I'm having the exact problem and, unlike others, I've not been able to resolve.

    About a week ago I received a new FVS318N as a replacement for my FVS318v3, which was working flawlessly on my home network since I installed it July 2007. (I "upgraded" to take advantage of the improved bandwidth of the 318N and eliminate a separate, external WAP.)

    I installed the 318N and configured it identically (where applicable) to the device it replaced:

    DHCP on
    Obtain IP from ISP
    DNS server IPs from openDNS
    MAC addr of computer I used to set up my cable modem
    No firewall rules or filters
    Windows 8 firewall off; Norton Smart Firewall off
    Block UDP flood off (unchecked)

    After an extraordinarily frustrating day configuring and testing, the best I could get is the following:

    Wireless devices: full Internet access
    Wired devices: Intermittent ping and VOIP traffic, but no web browsing (ftp not tested)

    I upgraded the firmware from 4.2.1-2 to 4.3.0-19 and spent another day duplicating the configuration and t-shooting process with the same outcome: intermittent ping and nothing else on wired; full access on wireless.

    On wired devices, when attempting to access a site such as www.google.com, for example, in my browser I see a "Connected to www.google.com..." message and then a few moments later I get "The connection was interrupted."

    Following a post in this thread, I reverted to firmware 4.0.1-67. After installing the firmware and doing nothing else, all wired devices are able to automagically access the internet--i.e., I could pass all traffic. (Wireless devices still good.)

    I then attempted the following firmware versions:

    4.0.1-67 ==> 4.1.0-27; result: no change from 3.2.1-2 / 4.3.0-19
    4.1.0-27 ==> 4.1.1-8; result: no change from 3.2.1-2 / 4.3.0-19
    4.1.1-8 ==> 4.1.1-14; result: no change from 3.2.1-2 / 4.3.0-19
    4.1.1-14 ==> 4.2.0-14; result: no change from 3.2.1-2 / 4.3.0-19

    After reverting back to 4.0.1-67 I again have full Internet access on both wireless and wired connections.
    Note that, per Support's recommendation, I did a factory reset after each firmware installation with no effect.

    I've read a lot of posts with assertions of defective units causing these types of problems, but I would like to assume that my problems are operator error and that I overlooked an obvious configuration setting. (I'm a software guy, not a networking expert.) Support has offered to generate an RMA for me to return the unit, but before doing so I'd like to try 4.3.0-23 once it's released.

    Does any of this ring any bells with anyone and, if so, can you provide some guidance on getting full functionality with a newer firmware version?

    NETGEAR asserts that this probelm was fixed in 4.1, and another post supports that assertion, but I'm not seeing it.

    Thanks for any wisdom you can share, and Happy New Year.

  • No issues so far with 4.0.1-67, but I am not (as of yet) using any but the most basic features.

    OK, so perhaps I was premature with that assessment. Over the past 2 weeks I've been having a lot of wireless connectivity issues. Devices are being dropped (I only have 8 connections) and the bandwidth is often constrained (<1Mbps on wireless vs. 50+Mbps on wired). Signal strength is good.

    Odd, frustrating behavior....
