FVS336v2 replacement due to speed lmitation

Hello everybody,

we used to have a Netgear FVS336Gv2 which we are more or less happy with. Combined with 2 times WAN with 16Mbps down- and 1Mbps upstream each it worked sufficiently (little problems here and there and some strange behavior from time to time but nothing really serious).

Now we upgraded one WAN to 150Mbps Down- and 10Mbps Upstream with an option for an upgrade of the second WAN and the problems are starting. We only get 25Mbps of downstream but full upstream. A little search in the forums revealed that others are facing the same problem: 60Mbps LAN-to-WAN throuput according to the datasheet but only roughly 30Mbps of actual downstream due to current firmwares. So we definitely need a replacement. For that we got some questions:

1. The LAN-to-WAN speed in the datasheet: Is this measured per WAN connection or for both WANs combined? If that is the combined speed even the refreshed hardware version (FVS336Gv3 with 350Mbps) would not be sufficient for us when applying the same ratio between nominal and actual LAN-to-WAN throughput. We need at least 300Mbps of actual LAN-to-WAN throughput.

2. In the forums I found an announcement that Netgear is going to shut down some of its business lines starting 01.01.2017. Regarding the lack of really new products lately in the VPN Firewall section we have the fear to buy a product which will be discontinued within one year.

Does anyone have information regarding these to points? We would be really happy about that.

Best regards

Michael Biber

  • Hello okadis,

    Welcome to the community!

To answer your questions, the 60Mbps speed is actually a combination of the two WAN ports same as the FVS336Gv3 with 350Mbps (also combined speed of both WAN ports). So if you want to utilize you 150Mbps download speed, you may have to upgrade to the v3 version. For your second question, this is only for the UTM series and does not apply to the VPN firewalls.

I hope the information I posted answered your questions, let us know.

    Thanks,

      Hello JohnRo,

thank you for your fast and detailed reply.

I have another following question. We are planning to upgrade our second WAN to 150Mbps, too. So we would have a combined speed of 300Mbps down- and 20 Mbps upstream. Is the FVS336Gv3 able to handle that? With the current rate of actual to nominal LAN-to-WAN speed we are in doubt that the FVS336Gv3 can handle 300Mbps of downstream.

Based on the nominal values the SRX5308 should be able to handle it. But this is a device which came to market at 2010 so we fear this would be outdated very soon, too.

Are there any best practices to reduce the workload of the devices in order to increase the actual throughput? We have currently no content filter or IDS activated.

      Best regards

      Michael Biber
