Maximal number of PPTP users - FVS336Gv3

Dear all,

I have created 40 PPTP VPN users in FVS336Gv3 device without any problem. But only first 25 users (on the user list) can connect to PPTP VPN server. For other users, I get error message:

Error 691: The remote conenction was denide because the user name and password combination yoru provided is not recognized, or the selected authentication protocol is not permitted on the remote access servers.

Is there any limit regarding number of PPTP VPN users?

How I can avoid this limitation?

I am using generic windows VPN client (Windows 8.1)

Also, I have enabled L2TP VPN server, but I can't find where I should input pre-shared key (I need pre-shared key, or certificate, in order to configure windows L2TP connection)?

Thank you in advance,

Milan

    Hi milan_zikic,

    Welcome to the community! :)

A maximum of 25 simultaneous PPTP user sessions are supported.  This is not a limitation, it is by design.  As reference, kindly read page 420 of the FVS336Gv3 reference manual here.

Same goes with L2TP, a maximum of 25 simultaneous L2TP user sessions are supported.  Again, this is not a limitation, it is by design.  As reference, kindly read page 424 of the FVS336Gv3 reference manual here.

About where to input pre-shared key, hope the article below would help as reference guide:

    Configure L2TP on Windows 7 64-bit

      Hi DaneA,

      Thank you for quick reply

I know that a maximum number of SIMULTANEOUS PPTP user sessinons is 25, but I didn't talk about sessions. I have a problem with PPTP user account.

      Example:
      - I have created for example 40 PPTP user ACCOUNTS
      - there is no any established PPTP connection
      - I can established PPTP connection for first 25 PPTP user account on the account list - In this momment, I don't use simultaneous connection - just ONE connection is established
      - When I try to establish PPTP connection with 26-th PPTP user account credentials (there is no any active (established) PPTP connection in this momment), I have received error message. This is same, for 27th, 28th,... user accont on the account list.

      I just want to:
      - create 50 PPTP user account, to be able to connect to PPTP server simultanously (but just 2 or 3 connection, not more)

I am able to create 50 PPTP user account, but every user starting from 26 place on the account list is not able to connect, even if there is no any established VPN connection

      How I can solve it?

      Thank you in advance

      Milan

        milan_zikic,

I did a research about the Error 691 you have encountered and found out that the possible cause of it is that the authentication phase erred out because of wrong credentials being passed.  Here are the possible solutions to it below:

        a. Make sure to enter the correct username and password.

        b. Double-checked that 'Caps Lock' is not turned on when typing the credentials.

        c. Make sure the authentication protocol as selected on the client is permitted on the server.
