Of course, you could set a static IP to the access point instead of using the BT Smart Hub 2 routers DHCP assigned one. You need to reserve this address, and ensure the DHCP does not use this address. Typically, this is done by setting the DHCP pool to a smaller set of IP addresses.
Nothing more private in this aspect: The AP must use an address on the IP subnet configured on the BT Smart Hub 2 router for the LAN subnet, the wireless clients anyway (typically still DHCP) for connecting to that very same network.
