Odd issue with WAX 620 and 2008 MacBook
I have AT&T 1 Gig internet service. I use their Remote Gateway (Connect 1) installed in my basement. I have a CAT 6 wire running upstairs to the main level which connects into the WAX 620 (Connect 2). I have various devices that connect. (iPhones, New MacBook, PCs, TVs doorbell, security cameras and garage doors). All work well and have no issues. I have an old 2008 MacBook. The 2008 MacBook recognizes Connect 2 and if I select it immediately disappears from the 2008 MacBook connection list. It does recognize Connect 1 and if selected, it connects fine. I am thinking it is a setting on the MacBook. More of a curiosity than anything. My MacBook Pro 2021 has no issues connecting to anything in the house. Simply the old MacBook recognizes Connect 1 and Connect 2 but can only connect to Connect 1.
This is not an issue for me because I don't use the old MacBook. I have thought about installing Linux on it but just haven't done it.

Try the following:
Check if the ATT modem-router sets up the AP's radios in 802.11AC or 802.11N mode ?
By default WAX620 has both radios in 802.11AX mode.
Did you check 802.11W/PMF/WPA1 or WPA2 settings.
Older laptops may not like 802.11R/W/PMF/WPA2 settings.
you can use any of popular wi-fi scanners software to see what is difference between the two wifi beacons frames and configure as needed on the WAX620. But please remember, by turning OFF newer protocols that WAX620 provides, the over all efficiency/security may decrease.
I remember in 2008 days WPA1+WPA2 was common.
Now WPA1 (TKIP) should not used as there are lots of known vulnerabilities.
WPA2 (AES) is the minimum security that should be used.
Did you check if the 2008 MBP had a new driver for wifi ?

I just have few questions regarding your issue:
1. Were you able to compare the wireless settings (channel, encryption etc.) from Connect 1 to Connect 2?
2. Was it working before?
3. What frequency are you connecting (2.4, 5GHz)?
