WAX620 Dead loop on virtual device
I switch from my WAX610 to my WAX620 which was not used as I tried to fix the error that I'm seeing in the logs. Unfortunately I have the same message in the WAX 620 logs In the file diagnostic I...

My WAX 610 was up to date and was having the problem.
I switched it to a never used WAX 620 so factory reseted, but not updated yet.
I started to investigate on my WAX 610 because I had some issues with ACL that seems not to be recognized, I also have a Sonos setup (known to have a STP problems) which I thought might create a loop, but I've disconneted the wired speakers to be sure it wasn't that.
About sharing logs I downloaded the diagnostics so I have the tar.gz but is it safe to publicly post it ? I guess it contains some sensitive data, no ?

The problem is "just" the odd message on the WAX6xx console?

Crystal ball is on a holiday in Transylvania. What ACL have you tried to put in place you suspect isn't processed and active?

Sonos does require a workable STP configuration on -all- LAN switches, especially when "Sonos wireless" networks are connected to the LAN. Easy if users own switches allowing to configure STP to the book - impossible however eg. on consumer routers with LAN ports. What was brilliant in times where one Sonos wireless network is connected to a single Wi-Fi router is becoming a burden for many non-network engineers where multiple access points are connected to a wired network aka. LAN.
Sonos Support: Configure STP settings to work with Sonos
The key point here (tough Sonos fails to help their customers, they do a disservice) that some of the Sonos devices are creating a (unasked) what Sonos names a wireless network .... technically more a wireless Mesh network. Not all Sonos devices with Ethernet LAN ports are supporting this magic "Sonos wireless" while various newer Sonos models don't support it, as documented Switch Sonos between a wireless and wired setup - the selection is mutually exclusive.

Yes, something to share with Netgear support only.

Previously I had only one SSID open to all. But I wanted to restrict a SSID to some "trusted devices"
So that My children will connect to a second SSID that I will be able to shut down from time to time. 😎
so after creating the allow ACL of around 30 devices and applying it, sometime it seems that some devices where still allowed for the SSID even if not in the ACL list.
Besides of that there is the SONOS issue when trying to wire multiple devices. but on my last try I've disconnected the devices to have them out of the equation.
I only have a mix of sonos that should be able to handle the Sonos Net, I have a Playbar, some ikea bookshelves and a Sonos Boost that is wired. But as my son complains about some data loss on his speaker we tried to wire them. I've shut down the wifi to avoid any loop on them.
Anyway with the new app release it's even worse. And maybe I'll try a all wifi test putting back my WAX 610 in what is a wifi shadow (but has a RJ45 plug nearby) - ErwinLMay 28, 2024NETGEAR Moderator
Hello tbozo
I just have further questions below:
1. What is the switch model where the WAX620 is connected?
2. Were you able to see the support link of Sonos to work with STP?
https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/configure-stp-settings-to-work-with-sonos
3. Would you mind providing a network diagram of your network structure?
If you wish to proceed testing with WAX610 it will be your discretion.
Have a lovely day,

My router is a Mikrotik RB5009 it was already configured with STP accordingly to the Sonos Specs.
The WAX620 is connected to it via a POE injector and is configured with Spanning Tree Protocol Enabled (but there is no set of values besides enabled or disabled) is there some config somewhere else ?
The other wired sonos the Boost was connected to the via a non manageable Netgear POE switch (ProSAFE Plus 24 with PoE JGS524PE) and I had the Dead loop on virtual device in the logs.
But I've moved the boost to be directly connected to the router and it seems that I don't have problem any more.
At least when I have only one wired Sonos.
The logs showing the problem were not very meaningful to me, and I coul'dn't see any issue on the router log either, but I might not be looking at the right place. But it's not there anymore and my son isn't complaining anymore of lags on wifi (with his PS5)
So if I wanted to have more than 1 wired Sonos I would need to have them either directly connected to the router (which is a big limitation as it doesn't have so much ports) or have a STP capable manageable switch connected to the router to connect my sonos on ?- schumakuMay 29, 2024Guru - Experienced User
To my knowledge, the JGS524PE does not have any STP support available. Tome to upgrade your switch.... Nothing the WAY610 or 620 will magically fix on their own.
