To all that assisted on this thread - Update.
After quite an in depth collaboartion with Netgear support, it looks like our problems are close to be resolved with a pending firmware update to be released by Netgear. We have a beta version of that update that we are testing and it largely behaves as we expect.
We are told that the the release of the full update is a matter of few weeks.

I see that this thread is marked as solved - I certainly did not do it. Unfortunately the problem is far from solved what is the meaning of this phenomena?
Lack of any solution on sight, I had unticked it on your behalf yesterday.
