SXS80 2.5G LAN Ethernet Port 1 - Link speed limited to 1000 Mbps?
Hi, I am using a NAS (Synology DS1823xs+) that is connected via a CAT8 ethernet cable, from the NAS’ LAN 3 port (10GbE) to the LAN 1 port (2.5GbE) on a Netgear Orbi Pro 6 Satellite (SXS80) with the l...

Based on the AMD driver release notes (applicable to the Ryzen V-Series V1000, including V1780B), it would seem as if 2.5G should work - but there are some reported issues with XGBE (related to 2.5G), which might be why Synology has chosen to disable 2.5G..?

Interesting comparison however, well possible this lightyears ahead of what Syno does implement in their mainstream NAS...
Last time I looked into Syno around mid of March 2023, DSM 7.2 (don't remember if this was Beta or released) had a new Linux Kernel, version 4.4.302+ instead of the earlier 4.4.180+.
Fancy a snag preview into a different world? https://www.qnap.com/en/release-notes/kernel

You've convinced me, I suppose I will have to go with QNAP next time. 😉 By the way I tried manually setting the link speed to 2500 using ethtool, but lost the link to the NAS. Thankfully I was able to connect another ethernet cable to one of the other LAN ports, and then restart the NAS (which successfully reset the network configuration settings that were altered by ethtool).
I wonder what would happen if I try forcing 10G (using ethtool), instead of 2.5G. At least 10G is definitely supported, but I suppose doing so would not play well with the Orbi Pro Satellite? Ie, having a forced 10G port linked to a 2.5G port. - schumakuJul 14, 2023Guru - Experienced User
No clue why the device does tot show anything useful to ethtool. Must admit, in this context such a network adapter might be more difficult to support properly. This is why the competition does - instead of two low cost 10 GbE ports - offers some PCIe slot to install industry standard network adapters for copper and fiber (SFP+).
No idea where I had the impression this is the case for your device, thus I came to the wrong conclusion, there is E10G18-T2 in place.

Thanks, although I could probably buy the E10G18-T2 (or E10G18-T1) and add to the DS1823xs+, it would feel a bit silly just for the sake of increasing the link speed from 1000 to 2500 when considering how expensive those cards are.
I have sent a message to Synology to inform them that it seems as if the latest firmware for the AMD CPU (Ryzen V1780B) should support 2.5G, and if their developers would simply update the firmware and add 2.5G to the supported/advertised link modes, then it seems as if the problem would be solved. I doubt the Synology developers will spend much if any time at all on fixing this, so for now I will try to settle with 1G, or use two ethernet cables and configure those as 2G (1G + 1G) LAG (as I do have two free ports on the Orbi Pro 6 Satellite).
As an alternative to purchasing a network adapter, I suppose adding a network switch (with 10GbE and 2.5GbE) in-between the NAS (10GbE) and the Orbi Satellite (2.5GbE) could work...? Or maybe it is time to switch to QNAP 🙂
