Modem/Router Dilemma

I have a NightHawk C7000v2 modem/router that will not work without my AC-750 Smart WiFi Router model R6400 and when I try to update the firmware that is out of date I keep getting "The information you are about to send is not secure" and won't allow me to update. I can't update manually, or I don't think I can,and I'm at wits end to try and figure out what I'm doing wrong or not doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The C7000 is a modem and built in router, why not just use it for your internet and wifi services? The R6400 is now old and not a great router for use these days.

    1. The C7000 won't update. Its a modem/router combo device where the firmware is set by the ISP. Nothing to do there.
    2. What actual firmware is on the R6400? Is there a reason you think you need to update?
    3. If you have the R6400 connected to the C7000 and the C7000 is in router mode, the R6400 needs to be in access point mode or you're in a double nat. Do you have it setup that way?

Thank you for your response. I have the C7000v2 in conjunction with the R6400 because the C7000 won't work as a modem/router. I had Spectrum here to check out my system and didn't have an answer as to why I needed the R6400 . I will note that the C7000v2 is a refurb if that makes a difference. On my NightHawk app, the C7000 always flashes "Update Available" which is why I've been trying to update it, but the app just keeps me going in circles and having to start over. I'm not as advanced as you are so I don't know how to troubleshoot the C7000 to see why that router is inoperative. I appreciate your taking the time to walk me through this.
