That message probably has nothing to do with the modem/router not working.
Kitsap is right in saying that you can't update the firmware. The trouble is that last year Netgear released a broken iOS app that threw up that meaningless message.

You just have to ignore it.
I'd look for other ways of fixing your "won't work" issue. What problem do you have beyond that message?
