On Windows drivers and your USB box, you often don't have to install them. They are built into Windows, but not, sadly, into the "operating system" that Netgear uses to run routers. That is why ReadySHARE is limited in the drives it USB supports.
As a Linux user, you will surely have encountered devices that you cannot get to work. We see those "where can I get Unix" drivers here from time to time.

what is a baby boomer? I have siblings older than baby boomers.

my external USB is not on the list for the R7000, so why does it work in Windows network, and Linux as well?

so far I have not had a device ‘not’ recognized yet by Linux. Only a multi-function that Canon doesn’t make Linux drivers for. I even sent them a picture if the box stating ‘drivers for Windows, MAC, and Linux’. The scanner works, the fax works, but no printer drivers.
