I'd agree that the app is pretty basic. We usually advice those wanting to use the more advanced features to use the GUI on a pc/laptop. More options, details, and just tends to work better.
Did you try the speedtest in the gui? does it get the same speeds?
The one nice thing about the speedtest is that its hosted on the router so you're wireless won't impact its speeds. It should give you the best available speed.
Once you updated to the 9.6 firmware, did you try a factory reset?

I’ve tried everything you suggested above, but the issue remains.
For comparison, I previously had a TP-Link router, and updates always worked without requiring a factory reset—no reset needed at all.
I expected Netgear to be more advanced than others, but that hasn’t been my experience. I don’t like the app, and I don’t like the GUI—it feels like a newcomer to the market that used to sell groceries and is now making routers.
I’m 42 years old and a programmer, and I’ve worked in IT (hardware and software) since I was 18. An app and a GUI are, in my view, straightforward to make more user‑friendly and professional, so I don’t understand why Netgear hasn’t done that.
I bought this router for almost 200 euros (I’m in Europe; it was brand new and sealed, purchased from the second‑hand market), and for the price it seemed like the best option compared to other routers. But if I had bought it from a retail store, I would return it
