There are two distinctly different methods to connect a device on the internet to a device on the local network (LAN):
- Forward a specific port through the router from the internet to a specific device on the LAN.
For example, TCP Port 21 is used for TFP. Port 21 (FTP) could be forwarded to one specific device on the LAN. Thus, a s device wanting an FTP connection from the internet to an FTP server on the LAN could be forwarded through the router to that specific device. (It cannot be connected to any other device.) - User OpenVPN to connect a remote device to the local LAN, where it can connect to any port on any device on the LAN.
