MR80 google home devices lose connectivity first, then everything and admin fail

I have 2 MS80 satellites and the MR80 installed for about 6 months.  We've experienced a couple lockups of the wifi when my son is using his xbox.  I turned on QOS and that mostly sovled the issue.  However, I woke up to the wifi being unresponsive this AM, no Inet traffic, the admin from the phone app initially said it was connected then bombed out.  i powered off/on the MR80 and its back up but there is nothing in the logs other than initialization messages which start on Nov 23,2022, which i assume is a default because once NTP is up the time is correct.

All boxes are on latest firmware, MR80 is V1.1.7.14_3.1.109

any ideas on troubleshooting?  I have the security installed also, i'm considering turning that off if its overloading the router but it doesn't have any alerts.  any other ideas or ideas for troubleshooting?

How fast is you Internet? Anything above about 200 Mbps and QoS is more an unnecessary hindrance than a help. It gobbles up processor capacity.

Did you restart the lot in the recommended order?

    • Turn off and unplug modem.
    • Turn off router and computers.
    • Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
    • Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
    • Turn on satellites, computers and rest of network.

What security is that? As you say, some can overload the router.

Then the usual boilerplate question to eliminate some of the more common issues that crop up here.

If there is one it might also help if you told people the make and model number of the modem/gateway/ONT that connects this router to the Internet. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?

I ask because a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.

Having two routers on a network can cause headaches. For example, you can end up with local address problems.

I power cycled the MR80.  This has happened several times, and after trial and error rebooting only it solves the problem the same as powering down everything in order.

cable modem is a Motorola surfboard SB6141 direct to the MR80

the security is the built in netgear armor.

spectrum internet 200MB, but the system died overnight, so overload wasn't a factor at the time.

If QOS isn't turned on the XBOX isn't playable, so that's a no go.

my first guess is that the google home displays are trying some sort of update or phone home in the middle of the night, because previously armor complained about a ton of IPV6 traffic on the local network between them as a DOS and was blocking it, so i unblocked that block.

I take it the MR80 doesn't have any heartbeat or network monitoring that goes to some hidden admin log page?

No router section to get in the way.

As an experiment, tried turning that off? As you said earlier, it can eat resources. Likewise QoS and traffic metering. They all put a load on the router's processor.

If QOS isn't turned on the XBOX isn't playable, so that's a no go.

That's odd. I'd investigate that.  Why "isn't playable"? How is it connected? At your speeds it should have no problems, but XBox turns up here far too often with other issues. QoS is rarely the solution. It is usually a NAT thing.

Have you ever reset the router? It shouldn't be necessary, but it is the first thing that Netgear would suggest if you have issues, especially after a firmware update.
