Did you perform a 30-30-30 reset on the MS?
How did you attempt to update the MS? Auto update or manually using it's web page with a web browser and ethernet connected PC?

Manually update per page 93 of the manual, Wi-Fi connected PC. Manual does not mention ethernet connection
To manually update your satellite’s firmware:
1. Launch a web browser from a computer or mobile device that is connected to your
mesh network.

Can follow this guide as well for manually updating your system:

MS FIRST, then MR lastly.
If your MR is updated prior to the MS, you'll need to downgrade the MR back to what you had on it long enough to get the MS updated FIRST, then update the MR back.

I'm not 100% sure of this next statement, but probably close to 90% sure. After the satellite update failed but before I upgraded the router I tried to connect to the satellite via the router interface but the only option was to select the other satellite. I also attempted to log in to the satellite on the IP address it had before the update but no good. This is only two years old and I don't want to ruin the router.

Although all of that took place before I did the factory reset on the bad satellite
