Nighthawk Mesh wifi 6 router not delivering full speed through wired connection

I have 1 Gb broadband. In the Netgear app, it confirms my internet speed as 947Mbps.

When I connect my PC over ethernet (via a gigabit switch)  I'm only getting 350Mbps.

If I copy a large file from my pc to another on the network, I get well over 900 Mbps.

So it seems safe to conclude that it's not the pc, the switch or the cable modem. The problem seems to lie with the Netgear router capping the ethernet throughput at 350 Mbps.

I can't see a setting in the app to change this. Is it a bug or a feature?

  • Current topology is:

Cable modem (wifi off) --> MR60 router (handling dhcp and wifi) --> gigabit switch -->PCs, devices

I could change it to get round the problem thus:

Cable modem (handling dhcp but wifi off) --> switch --> MR60 for wifi devices only

...with PCs & non-wifi devices connected to switch

But that is inelegant and creates another subnet, which I don't want.

    MR60 firmware is up-to-date.

The cable between the MR60 and the switch is CAT6, only 2m long.

What is that anonymous cable modem?

Sounds suspiciously like it could be a modem/router. Modems don't do WiFi. Turning off the WiFi does not disable the router bit.

If so, that could cause your problems. You have piled router on router.

Two routers on your network can cause headaches. For example, you can end up with local address problems. Among other things, the other router can misdirect addresses that the Netgear router usually handles, such as routerlogin.net or the usual IP address for a router, 192.168.1.1.

This explains some of the other drawbacks.

Unless you have specific reasons for using two routers – to create two separate networks for example – it is often easier to use just one router and then to set up the second router as a wifi access point. Netgear advises this, as does just about every site you will visit.

It may be possible to put the unnamed modem/router into modem only (bridge) mode and then to use the second device as the router. Sometimes it is easier to put the second router into AP mode. But that has its own drawbacks:

It is a Virgin router, in modem mode. As it is not connected to the same switch as the MR60, it would make no difference anyway whether it has wifi or dhcp on or off.

My problem is that the gigabit port in my MR60 maxes out at 350 Mbps, so I don't get the full advantage of the 1 gig internet connection I'm paying for. I just need to know if there's a fix for this, or is it a limitation of the MR60.
