saving the configuration

as a person who as written software since 1975, I do not see any logical explanation for a company like Netgear to refuse to provide information regarding one of their features of their product. When I use the 'save config' feature, I would like to know exactly what fields are being saved to that file and will be restored during the restore function. This is not a difficult request. The software has the code to move each field to the disk file. Just tell me what fields are being saved.  The reason for my inquiry is due to the 'factory reset' that was performed to restore the operation of my router.  Once it was working again, I restored the last backup I had created and as far as I could tell, not a single change that I had made was restored.  This required me to reconfigure all the devices (all 45 of them) one again.  Major pain in the you know what.

What FW version do you have loaded on the MK system?

What browser are you using to manage the MR and save off and re-load the backup config file from the PC?

So after a FR, then reloading the backup file, the wifi SSID names are not changing to what you had configured or DHCP IP address reservations not being put back in place? More details would be helpful here.

Due to security concerns I presume that's come about over past 20 years, router mfrs have started to encrypt backup files and core FW files to keep the system running safe and out of prying nefarious people. So don't look for anything readable or viewable by home users. Though I would and do expect the backup file to work for user. If its not working then would need to troubleshoot this and if we cant narrow it down or resolve it here, then we'll need to get you to NG support and let them know.

My only request is for a list of data elements that are backed up.  I don't need to know the order they are backed up.  I don't need to know how they are encrypted.  I have no desire to attempt to parse out the various data elements in the file.  I only want to know what is really being backed up.  And I don't need to know about any hidden data elements (elements that I have no control over).  I just want a document that lists each data element that I can modify, that will be restored from the back up file.  This way, as I change my configuration, I will know what I need to write down myself, and what will be restored programmatically.  For example, the names of the routers.  I had named them Offcie, MainFloor and Downstairs.  Now they are just satellite-3, -1 and -2.  So that appears to be a missing element.

Was that in developing firmware for consumer network systems?
