How long does a firmware upgrade takeIf you are asking about the time for the firmware to write to the router, a few minutes is about right.
If you want to know how long it takes for new firmware to arrive in the support forum or the update server, that varies.
For a detailed response, you'll have to tell us a bit more than that bald question.
PS I have moved this discussion to the appropriate section of the Netgear community, the area where they talk about gaming routers.

As above, the firmware upgrade itself will take about 5 minutes.
As for new firmware, we don't yet have an ETA for when there'll be a new one released but we are currently working on it.

My 2 week old XR1000 router has been updating for over 15 min. What gives? Now I'm in limbo as I don't know when it will reboot and I need to do a large download. Did I make a mistake in buying this? I was replacing my 5 year old Asus and the new Asus I tried out still had some of the some issues as the old. So I'm trying this XR1000 and I'm NOT happy. While rebooting it (the correct way) yesterday, I had to reload so much that I nearly took my 5 lb hammer to it. WHAT GIVES NETGEAR!?!?!?!? It has been over 20 now and still has not finished!

Should not take over 5 minutes to update FW.
Be sure your using a good browser. MS Edge or Firefox.
I would probably factory reset the router first, setup basics, then manually load FW using a wired PC and web browser:
