Nighthawk XR300 Slow Speeds

Earlier this week I picked up the Nighthawk XR300 and I've been having a bit of issues with the speed.

On my old ISP-supplied Huawei HG659b, I would get anywhere from 800-950mbps on my gigabit connection, however on the XR300 I'm lucky if I break 100mbps.

I'm using a CAT6 ethernet cable, (same one used with old router, so no issues there) and I'm still getting these sub-par speeds.

I've tried updating the firmware, rolling it back, disabling QoS and factory resetting.

Even when alloacting all the down/up bandwidth to my PC and running speedtest, the speeds remained somewhat the same around the 100mbps mark.

I've also been having a bit of intermittent issues with the Wifi, ocassionally the speed will just plummet to around 8mpbs and become generally unstable (usually around 70-80mbps for comparison).

Unfortunately in all my attempts to try and remedy the issues, the speeds still remain low.

Speedtest here

If anyone has any tips or directions in what to do, I'd be very greatful.

  • Just to double check, have you put your expected speeds into the Bandwidth settings in the Anti-Bufferbloat options? Also in the Anti-Bufferbloat options is that where you have disabled QoS as if not it won't truly be disabled. If you have then that usually indicates an issue upstream. It could be that it's not synced properly with your modem/ISP yet. If you use the MAC address of the old router and set the XR300 to that then this can resolve that. For WiFi have you used a wifi analyser to find the least congested channel and change to that?

Hi Fraser, thanks for the info.

The speeds in the bandwidth settings were auto-populated (1000mbps up & down).

QoS was disabled in the Bufferbloat options (not sure where else it can be disabled).

As suggested I tried using the MAC address from the old router, but this doesn't seem to have made a difference unfortunately.

For networks, it's pretty isolated where I am and there's only one neighbouring Wifi network - their channel is on the opposite end of the spectrum compared to mine for both 2.4GHz and 5Ghz.

Interesting, in the table view of the device manager what are the link speeds for all your ports? Also I know you said the ethernet cable was fine but do you have another to check with just in case?
