I gave up and did the hardware reset in the end.
But I am concerned about why it happened, and whether it will happen again.... No one gave me a straight answer as to the cause.

Glad you got it working. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

Possible some odd corruption over time or after FW was updated that may have caused the WEB UI services to get in some bad state. Hard to tell or say though. Possible some new FW code and features were at odds with older code that was loaded.
Why I usually will do a full power OFF and ON of the systems I work with after a FW update, If I see odd issues, then its OFF to a factory reset to check things.
