Like every producer of electronics these days, Netgear has introduced a way to configure consumer WiFi routers (Nighthawk and Orbi) using a smartphone or tablet. (Fewer and fewer customers own desktop computers, or laptops with Ethernet ports. For a growing number of consumers, using a smartphone 'app' is the only practical way.)
While Orbi WiFi routers will work "out of the box" using the WiFi credentials printed on the label, many customers prefer to set a new WiFi router to exactly the same WiFi credentials as the system being replaced. That way, devices will connect automatically to the new system. The 'app' provides a method to do this.
Unlike some other brands, Netgear's smartphone apps do not provide access to ALL of the router features. It is sort of a "hot mess". Some features can be managed only using the web interface (which needs a screen much larger than the typical smartphone. Some features can be managed only using the smartphone 'app'.
