Extending Signal Outdoor to gate.

I have added a video/Call box to my gate that is 850' from the house. There are trees that keep it from being line of sight.  I have 2 options.. Run Fiber Optic (best solution but expensive) from the house to the gate, or ad access points to get signal to the gate. I use the RBR850 Orbi.  Can I use a CAT5 connection into a off brand outdoor AP that goes to a 2nd AP half way, that goes to another AP at the gate to I can use a CAT5 connection into the gate module. If this is possible it would be much cheaper than having fiber buried from the house to the gate.

Is this even posable with the Orbi?  Would you tackle this a different way?

I disagree.  Orbi systems create a seamless roaming mesh only with compatible Orbi satellites. They are compatible with any brand of equipment that has an Ethernet interface or any brand of WiFi Extender.  The only restriction is that devices will not roam seamlessly between the Orbi network and those networks.  A device that remains in a fixed location is not affected by this limitation.

As indicated in message number 1, the best solution is to install fiber optic cable from the house to the gate. This solution may be impractical and costly.

The next best solution is to bridge the distance with a wireless point-to-point bridge. There are products from major manufacturers, such as TP-Link, Ubiquiti, EnGenius, and TRENDnet.   Amazon also features products from less well-known companies.  They are rated in terms of miles/kilometers, so a distance of 800 feet should not be a problem.  The signal may even be strong enough to avoid the need to mount one end outside of the house, thus avoiding penetrating the outside wall.

The trees mentioned in message 1 are definitely a consideration.  I would want to purchase from a vendor with a generous return policy, such as Amazon.

Atempting to "hop" from one access point to another is a way to avoid the trees, but brings up the issues of:

    • Providing power to those units, and
    • Mounting those units.

Even if that is the best way to avoid the trees, a couple of point-to-point bridge bridge units would be better than ordinary  WiFi access points which have omnidirectional antenna patterns.

I would start by reading product reviews on Amazon to get a general sense of what customers have done with those products.

Thats kind of what I am asking. It looks like that product is no longer made, and with my Orbi system I am limited to what I can tie into it. So is it posable to use access points that are not Orbi's to extend my signal, if the start and stop points of the AP are wired.  I am sure there is a technical way to say what I am trying to coney. Sorry I do not know the terms.

      • Might do a search for air bridge on Amazon, there are other brands that make them I believe.
