I am also a CenturyLink 1G fiber subscriber

I am also a CenturyLink 1G fiber subscriber, and when I was running my previous Nighthawk router, I was able to use its PPPOE + VLAN tagging as CenturyLink requires, allowing me to eliminate the free (and inferior) router that came for free with the service. However, when I installed my Orbi 950 and attempted the same thing (require internet login, PPPOE, specify username/password from CenturyLink, enable VLAN tagging with ID 201), my connections were terrible and very inconsistent. I reconfigured and rebooted repeatedly to try to get this to work, to no avail. At times, all wireless devices (including ones connected wirelessly to the extenders connected via wired backhaul) worked great and at high speed, but wired connections did not. Other times, wireless clients couldn't see the internet connection. All devices are on the latest firmware (V6.3.7.10).

I've never managed to get PPPOE + VLAN tagging working reliably on my Orbi 950, and have reverted to running the old CenturyLink router to perform the PPPOE login + VLAN tagging, and daisy-chaining the Orbi to the ethernet port on the CenturyLink router. I'd really like to get rid of the latter, as it adds nothing and occasionally needs to be rebooted. Has anyone else figured out how to get this to work?

  • I don't know if this will help:

I think this gets you the PPPoE setup during the installation process, however to get the final VLAN Tag configured, you'll need to use the RBRs WEB UI page to make that configuration. https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-WIFI-6-AX-AND-Wi-Fi-6E-AXE/Orbi-RBR850-with-Centurylink-Fiber/m-p/2076711/highlight/true#M13729

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

Or use the ISP router to handle the PPPoE connecton and it's DMZ for the RBR in router mode with DCHP on the WAN side.

  • Nope I haven’t had luck either. Been waiting on the beta firmware but still no ETA on that
  • Any progress on this?
