  • WOW, this morning about 2am i decided to update my two ORBI RBS satillites first. and that went ok, till a fantom ORBI showed up in my Orbi App. i then proceeded to update the RBR750, that went well till it said it was online but it wasnt. i followed the directions according to Furrye38, (ty) and i unplugged the sats and then the router, waited 2-3 minutes then i plugged in the router and then the sats and waited........it took a few minutes and the router came online then the sats followed. it still took some time for all my devices to get back on line (about 60), which is normal thing that has been happening. then today was the test. we had some heavy thunderstorms roll in, these south florida storms alway knock out some power or damages some weak transformers to were the power goes on and off real quick. it happened 3 times in a half hour i also have the comcast modem and the RBR750 plugged into a surge and battery back up. the weakest like here is the sats, no battery-back up for them and they used to take forever to re-sync but after the upgraded firmware last night, WOW, the ORBI's came right back online which shocked me, i thought i would need to reboot the sats. but no input from me and the whole system came back online quick. i am no IT guy here but this is a major inprovement from the previous firmware that almost killed the ORBI system. thanks to all here on this forum, i have learned alot from here.

  • I write this post to say goodbye to Netgear, forever. I leave it as a cautionary tale for anyone planning on purchasing. And I hope, someone in Netgear reads this, and questions their corporate behaviour towards this community.

On paper, Orbi is a cracking system

Few mesh systems can compete with Orbi when it comes to hardware specifications. The RBK753 has cutting edge wifi technology, that in theory, is class leading.

However, the reality is this system is a hot mess

Lets start with the good. When it works, the system is lightning fast. My 1GB connection is comfortably pumped around my house, and whether connected to the base router or satellite, I get a solid 600-700mpb over a wifi 6 iphone. Apple connectivity is stable with bonjour and airplay, not the case for many routers. And aesthetically, it's a nice system.

However, the v4 firmware is a disaster. Satellites disconnect at regular intervals. Lights cycle between white flashing, to blue, to nothing. Disconnections occur. This has been happening for months without fix.

This has taught me a big lesson with wifi and home networking - speed is nothing, without stability.

Issues happen. The sign of a company is how they deal with them.

The firmware issues are very frustrating. But what it has exposed is much worse; a company who do not seem to care about their customers and the issues they are facing.

There has been no public acknowledgement of the problem. No one posts on these forums from Netgear, not one moderator steps in to provide assurances issues will be fixed. The silence is deafening.

To make it worse, support only lasts 90 days. So Netgear break the system you purchase, then don't provide support - astonishing!

The various levels of support do not talk to eachother or understand the issue. The amount of product on this forum that Netgear have returns and replaced for hardware issues, when it is clearly firmware, is shocking. Waste of time and effort all round, when the issue is dead clear on the firmware.

There is no way to roll back the firmware - this one really gets me. v4 is clearly broken. v3 worked. But Netgear won't allow a roll back, won't acknowledge the issue, so you're stuck. Why you might ask? A roll back would seem obvious? I suspect its because the new firmware brings with it a paid subscription to parental controls...

So in the bin it goes, along with a lifelong netgear customer

That's me done. I've used Netgear products all my life, but never again. I am shocked at how Netgear have handled this whole mess.

The sign of a great company is not never making mistakes, but how they deal with them. Netgear need to be better than this.

Looks like I'm not the only one.  Maybe I should start looking for another system

  • I have a RBK 752 which consists of a rbr750 router with a corresponding satellite. The system worked like a rockstar until some firmware update made it practically useless. It requires multiple reboots to connect to the Internet daily. Updating to the latest firmware 4.6.5.14 and resetting the router helped a little but still have constant issues.
  • UPDATE - After the RMA

Replacement RBR750  was installed but needed NG support as it hung on the password reset during setup. Not a big deal.

It was 3.x firmware and it forced the update... SCARED... Went without a hitch. Decided to not have the satelite on the setup this time since I want to test the strength of signal since I not in a ranch style home. I am in a 4200 sq ft 2 story with the center being a large open octagon shaped living room and everything else is wraped around it. Router is on 1st floor on one side of the octagon. It works perfectly in this environment at full power with everything enabled and no sats. The upgrade or the unit itself was bad but I never got RC. If you are having issues like I did, push for a replacement.

Glad you gots omething working. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

  • Installed the update from this complete P.O.S. firmware to 4.6.7.5 and all of my issues went away: no more disconnections of devices from the mesh, and no more daily+ disconnects of the RBR750 from the cable modem. Installed the update to RBR and (2) RBS750s 7 days ago and rock solid at full bandwidth since - I'm getting ~900 megabits on the wired satellite, and upwards of 750 on the wireless connection. Comcast/Xfinity 800Mbps service, so 900 is a good number.

If you haven't installed the 4.6.7.5 upgrade yet, do it ASAP. It actually works.
