Please navigate to the link below for step-by-step instructions on how to update your RBR850/RBS850:

https://kb.netgear.com/000037217/How-do-I-check-and-manually-upgrade-the-firmware-on-my-Orbi-satelli...

Be sure to update the RBS FIRST, then the RBR lastly.

NOTE: Orbi app or the routers web page may not report seeing new FW updates. NG may not push this to there auto update services immediately and may activate the newer FW update being seen on there auto update services at a later time. User will have the choice to manually update if you want too.

NOTE: The Disable Auto Update feature only prevents ANY new FW from being installed if available. This does NOT prevent the system from checking NG services to see if new FW is available. If new FW is available, this will be displayed as a notification to the user on the RBRs web page only. It will be up to the user to upgrade FW or not.

A factory reset maybe needed if problems are encountered after the FW update:

https://kb.netgear.com/31486/How-do-I-reset-my-Orbi-system-to-factory-default-settings

NOTE: Recommend setting the default DHCP IP address pool range to the following after applying and a factory reset: 192.168.#.100 to 192.168.#.200

  • I was feeling frisky today and hit the "Update All" button. Everything has come back up in working order, it seems.

The guest network SSID was visible for a few minutes after boot, but it looks like it is gone now.

For weeks I am not able to update my Orbi system. First it told me that there are no updates and now it tells me for RBR that there is update but not for RBS.

I tried also a manual update but Orbi refused to update telling me that something is wrong with files. I downloaded them from the link supplied here.

I mean, after all, it is not big deal because my Orbi system works just fine, but it is strange what's going on ...

  • CrimpOn "Do I understand correctly that firmware v4.6.9.11 on the Orbi 850 allows customers to reach the web interface from the internet? (i.e. using the public IP address or a Dynamic DNS name)"

100% correct! The web interface can be accessed from internet on firmware v4.6.9.11 without any issues. You can also change the port for extra security for example: https://dnsRBR850.com:46211

Thanks for the information.  All this time I have been (a) annoyed that Remote Management was "gone", but (b) comforted that "At least we're all in this together."  The capability has been gone from the Original Orbi for so long that I have lost track of which firmware version last included it.

v.11 may have been the last version that had it supported. Even though the article is two years old, may have been a slow roll out or change across multiple products over time as this effects both Orbi and Nighthawk product lines that have lots of different models to cover.

I wouldn't look for this to be in any future FW versions as again, this was removed by NG for security reasons. Just like Telnet was. This isn't new to the Orbi domain.

I recently updated to this and started getting the dreaded lag spikes (e.g., intermittent 2-second freezes during Zoom calls every 5-10 minutes) that came with a disastrous software update from Netgear in 2021.

I am hoping that this is a one-off issue rather than a systematic one. Has anyone else experienced this issue?  I hope not.

I rebooted my router and problem persists. Any settings I should tinker with?

  • I have a problem where my RBR850 loses it's connection to my Nokia ONT, from Metronet. When this happens, the lights on the RBR850 turn magenta.

If I unplug the ethernet cable from the ONT to the RBR850, then plug it back in, the internet connection to the ONT starts working again. This happens about every 48 hours or so.

I have the latest firmware installed as of 3/25/2023, performed factory reset, etc. but the connection to ONT still goes out every couple days.

I'm using 3 RBS850's all hardwired to the router through a D-Link network switch. All of the sattelites show a good, wired backhaul connection.

    Can anyone offer suggestions?

What CAT# lan cable are you using between the RBR and ONT? CAT6A STP is recommended.

Sounds like there is a ONT service issue at the ONT and when it stops working right, and gets going again, it's not correctly handshaking with the RBR to get service re-established as you see when you disconnect the ethernet cable from the WAN Port then back in, it starts working. Something to contact the ISP about and let them know the ONT service is stopping every so often.

I'm currently using the ethernet cable that came from an eero, PRO6 E.

It doesn't say anything on the jacket.

I have a cat 7 cable that I will try tonight after work.

I have contacted Metronet several times and they tell me that everything looks good on their end???

Metronet provided me me an eero, PRO 6 E to try or troubleshooting purposes, but I have a bunch of money invested in my Orbi system, so, I want to use it. It's just so frustrating that it will work for a day, two or three before it loses connections so it's hard to troubleshoot.

  • I have the issue, that the router does not show more, than 44 devices in the device list. I can see both wired and wireless ones, but since I reached 44, no more new is visible. Any advise to solve this?

      No much to go on.

Where are you looking at the device list? WEB UI or Orbi app?

How many devices do you actually have all connected and online?

Be sure that mobile phones and pad don't have MAC ADDRESS Randomizers enabled while at home:

      https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-App/NETGEAR-Mobile-Applications-and-Apple-Devices-FAQ/td-p/2220016/jump-to/first-unread-message

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update? A complete pull of the power adapters for a period of time after the factory reset then walk thru the setup wizard and setup from scratch with a wired PC and web browser. Recommend setting the default DHCP IP address pool range to the following after applying and a factory reset: 192.168.#.100 to 192.168.#.200.

Where are you looking at the device list? WEB UI or Orbi app? -> Both the WEB UI and the Orbi app shows the same number of devices (44)

How many devices do you actually have all connected and online? -> Around 50

Be sure that mobile phones and pad don't have MAC ADDRESS Randomizers enabled while at home -> This is surely enabled, but all Apple devices are visible, the ones missing are not Apple ones.

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update? -> No, I did not do. Sorry to be pessimistic, but is this really a solution for such an expensive device? It was a pain setting up the device originally, I simply don't want to repeat it.

  • I know it's good to "don't fix what ain't broken", but no security vulnerabilities to patch or room for improvements for almost 9 months is surprising. Did our router reach EOL?
