ORBI internet issue

Righto, so paid over a thousand dollars for the ORBI 6 thing this afternoon. 7 hours later it is still not connecting to the internet. I have a Netgear D6220 modem router that is set to modem/router (these little beauties don't work on modem setting) that IS connected to the internet, and the Orbi is connected to that D6220 with the ethernet cable into the internet port. BUT still not internet. There is of course no manual to refer to and the ISP spent 2.5 hours with me on it this afternoon before throwing in the towel - and there is not way to contact the manufacturer so I'm turning to you good people. I'm not real tech savvy and am out of ideas.

  • so if you have the orbi connected to another router (D6220) its a double nat.

    It can cause issues.

    Fixes?

I'd either put the orbi's IP address into the D6220's DMZ or I'd put the orbi in access point mode.

The D6220 should have a modem only mode though. That would be the preferred setup.

    Did you try that?

There's a support site with access to manuals, firmware, install guides, etc.
    Go to https://www.netgear.com/support/
Type in your model number and from there it'll take you to the above.
Its a great resource to start with.

As plemans mentioned, user manuals are on-line.  Page 219 of the D6220 manual seems to indicate that the D6220 can be placed into "modem only" mode:

    https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/D6220/D6220_UM_EN.pdf

But that is not relevant to the situation.  A WiFi router will function perfectly well when connected to an existing router.  I have personally connected three routers in a row:

    • router1 LAN port to internet port of router2.
    • router2 LAN port to internet port of router3
    • router3 LAN port to user devices.

The issue with having more than one router is that specific applications do not work with this "Double NAT" arrangement. Things suc as certain internet gaming, port forwarding to LAN servers, VPN into the router LAN. See, for example:

    https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

If a computer connected to one of the D6220 LAN ports will function, then an Orbi router connected to the same LAN port should function.
