Orbi not connecting to Starlink

I received my Starlink in November 2022, despite reading the issues others were having with connecting to an Orbi system I had none.  The Orbi established a WAN connection to the Starlink which I then set to Bypass mode and I have had rock solid internet since.

A few weeks ago I had a Starlink issue and during troubleshooting I reset the Starlink router.  I traced the issue to a damaged Starlink cable and ordered a replacement and plugged the Orbi into my NBN Fixed Wireless NTD to provide internet connectivity in the interim.

The new Starlink Cable arrived yesterday, I plugged it in and the Starlink works fine but when I connect the Starlink Ethernet Adaptor to the RBR850 WAN port it doesnt establish a connection.  No settings have been changed on the Orbi since it last functioned.

It seems that others have the same issue but the only solution seems to be to add a switch between the Orbi and the Starlink.  I don't understand why this is necessary and how my system functioned before without it.

  • This has me a bit perplexed.  I successfully had my RBK855 system connected to Starlink without a switch in between for months.  Recently there was an issue which was traced back to a damaged Starlink cable which has now been replaced but during troubleshooting I reset the Starlink router.  Upon reconnection to the Starlink Ethernet Adaptor I cannot establish the WAN connection on the Orbi.  I have not changed any settings on the Orbi and it establishes WAN to the the NBN Fixed Wireless NTD which was utilised while awaiting the replacement cable.

Adding a switch seems like rudimentary solution.

  • Is the starlink in passthrough mode? or the netgear in access point mode?

Or you're in a double nat.

A double nat happens when you cascade more than 1 router.

Fixes? There’s 3 options but only use 1.
    1. Put the modem/gateway in modem only/pass through mode. This disables its routing functions.
    2. Leave the modem/gateway in router mode but put the Netgears IP address into its DMZ. This forwards the data to the netgear. You can either leave the modem/gateway’s wireless enabled or disabled. Just make sure its using a different wifi channel to prevent interference
    3. Put the Netgear into access point mode. This disables its routing functions. Wifi/ethernet still works but it does disable some features.

It’s not a double NAT issue, the Orbi isn’t resolving a WAN IP, even with the Starlink Router in Bypass

It wouldn't be the first time a reset cleared out bypass mode or caused a firmware update that caused issues with bypass mode.
