Orbi RBR850 - Port Forwarding not working

I am having issues with opening ports/port forwarding with my Orbi RBR850 Mesh Wifi system. I go thru advance setting, and complete the process for port forwarding, but the ports are still not opening? I am trying to open ports, for my Synology server to connect thru external IP address,  sync/update caldav/carddav (calendar/contacts) while not on my home network. Not sure why they are not showing open, when I check thru https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

I have read some of the other chats on similar issues, and have not figured this out yet. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Thank you CrimpOn! I believe you are correct, and my issue is with my ISP modem/router. I have an ATT BGW210, which can be a wifi router. I have the wifi disabled, and only using the wifi on my Orbi.

I followed the steps you provided...the IP address is different on the Orbi Internal IP address vs. public/external IP address from ShieldsUp vs. the ATT router/modem IP address. All 3 different.

Would this be addressed ATT router/modem setting...Firewall? Any idea where I go from here?

  • The most common factor preventing a consumer router from forwarding ports is being connected to an ISP router, rather than "just a modem" (or "just an Optical Network Terminator" - ONT)  When the ISP device is also a router, it will block incoming connections from reaching the customer router.

There are two ways to determine if this is the case:

    1. Look up the specific model number of the ISP device (from the product label) and see how it is described.
If the ISP device has options for WiFi, then it is definitely also a router.  (For example, if it mentions a WiFi name and password on the product label).
    2. Compare the WAN IP address of the consumer router with the public IP address shown by an internet tool.
Personally, I prefer Gibson Research ShieldsUp! https://www.grc.com/shieldsup
When you "Proceed" to the second page, and select "Common Ports" it will display the public IP address in a blue/green box.
Compare this with the Orbi router web browser interface, Advanced Tab home page Internet Port IP Address.
If SheildsUp! reports the same IP address as the Orbi page, then the ISP device is not a router.

Additionally...should I replace the ATT modem/router with my own?
