RBK752 RBR750 Crashes During High Speed Downloads Over Ethernet

I got my RBK752 system March 2022 and I've had this problem since day one. What's happening is the router (RBR750) will crash 90% of the time I'm downloading large files at speeds higher than 800mbps. This is when connected via ethernet on my desktop. I get a solid pink light on the front of the router when this happens. I have to unplug/replug the router to establish connection again. I have gigspeed internet through Google Fiber and was able to maintain high speed downloads in the 900-1100mb range without any problem on my previous router, an Orbi RBK50.

Things I've tried:

-Bypassed Orbi router while it was crashed with pink light and plugged ethernet cable from cable modem directly into a laptop and internet works perfect, confirming it's a router problem

-Updating to latest firmware. Currently on 4.6.11.1, have used 4.6.9.1 and whichever version the router came with.

-Reset router using paperclip after firmware updates

-Tried different cables

-Tried different ports on back of router

-Crash also occurs with my laptop via ethernet doing large files at 800+mbps

-Tried different router and no crashes when going above 800mb.

-Per Netgear tech support, tried: reducing MTU to 1492, using Primary DNS of 1.1.1.1 instead of auto/8.8.8.8, using secondary DNS of 1.0.0.1 instead of auto/8.8.4.4

Anyone have any ideas? I'm waiting for Netgear level two tech support to get back to me. Will update if anything gets figured out.

I wish I realized this was a problem right away so I could have returned the damn thing. I was getting this crash randomly, maybe once every week or two, for the first few months of ownership. I thought nothing of it, thought it was a random fluke, not realizing the problem wasn't showing itself simply because I hadn't been downloading large files. Then in July I began to download lots of large files anywhere from 2GB to 120GB and the crashes started occurring pretty much every time I download. I've had to set bandwidth limitations to 700mbps to be safe and prevent the crashing.

  • What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.

What downloads are you doing? Games?

Can you post screen captures of these speeds seen?

This has been a odd issue for user as others mentioned it as well on the 8 series Orbi. I have both and have tried it on my 8 series and downloading games on Steam as most users complain about this when downloading games from Steam. I've tried this a few times and have not been able to reproduce, even having two wired PC connected in back and downloading at the same time. I believe possible that I was not fully saturating the downloads or the Steam app was limiting the downloads so that the downloads were not being fully maxed out. No idea what that app does behind the scenes.

If your seeing speeds over 900Mbps on the down then possible the router is hitting it's max limit as the WAN and LAN ports are only rated for 1000Mpbs and which at most you should seen around 900Mpbs on wired speed tests and nothing more then that. For constant data downloads at this rate, posstible that the HW could be getting hot or over limit and the router is hanging or stopping. Something NG will need to look into.

I don't have a modem. With Google Fiber Webpass the modem is essentially the satellite on top of my building, and an ethernet cable runs from it directly to my unit where it connects with the Orbi router. It's worth noting that I've been in contact with Google regarding the problem and they've done everything on their end to verify it is not a problem with their equipment. They've done a reboot on the modem/satellite to be sure, and no one else in my building is having this problem.

Yes all cables are CAT6 or higher and I've tried different cables too.

Mostly games but also some photo/video files for work. This problem happens regardless of what content I'm downloading or what server I'm connected to. Basically if the files are being sent in excess 800mbps from any source, the problem happens.

Not at the moment but I will soon. Netgear support has asked me to do the same and I will get to it by this weekend hopefully.

I think our problems are different, since I can replicate the problem when downloading outside of Steam, and also I can replicate it on other PCs downloading at high speeds via ethernet connected to the same Orbi.

I've thought it's possible I'm hitting some sort of limit, but that shouldn't result in the router crashing and needing to be reset by unplugging it. If anything, it should hit whatever the cap is and stay pegged there. In speed tests I typically get in the high 800s to mid 900s for down and upload speeds. I've hit as high as 1.2Gbps with this router, my old Orbi RBR50, and an old Linksys DIR 890 L. I agree it may have something to do with hardware getting hot over time from prolonged high speed downloads since the crash typically happens after at least a minute or so of downloading. But there have been a few occasions where the router crashed almost immediately after starting the download.

    Curious how this is done?

I limited the bandwidth in each app I'm using for the download. I believe there are ways to do it in Windows Settings as well.

      • Does limiting the bandwidth in the app or Windows help any with the RBR crashes?
