RBK852 - smart devices lose connection

I have the RBK852 (AX6000) mesh system. Firmware version 4.6.9.11

I had 2 instances in the last 3 months where the WiFi would stop working after a power outage. The guest network would be ok, the main one would not. The only way to fix this was to rename my network to something new, save, then rename it back to the old network name.

This would work for my phones and laptops, but not for the smart devices (Kasa switches, Ring cameras, smart lock). It was very irritating to go around the house and help all my smart devices to connect back to the network 1 by 1.

The latest episode happened over the weekend where the smart devices had lost network connectivity again (no power loss AFAIK). The phone was connected, but was giving me 5-6mpbs on a 1gbps connection. I checked for firmware upgrade, upgraded firmware, rebooted the network. This resumed fast speeds for my phones and laptops. But the smart devices are all still disconnected.

This has been super frustrating. For all its speed, I am going to sell this mesh and get another brand. I cannot be doing this every month.

  • The Orbi RBK852 will work if the network is configured correctly.

    1. What is the make and model od the ISP modem/router to which Orbi is connected?
    2. Is the satellite wired to the router or is it wireless?
    3. What wired devices do you have in your network?
    4. Do you have any device "smart device" in the network that can act as a DHCP server, like wifi repeaters and similar?

      1. I don't know what model it is, its a Nokia device

      2. Satellite is wired

      3. Wired devices - Macbook, AppleTV, Philips Hue Hub

      4. No

Another thing I have noticed is, once the network gets into this weird state, the SSID to which the smart devices were connected to, even my phone/laptop cannot connect to anymore. The thing that helps is renaming the SSID to something else (like from Foo to Foo2), and then my phone can connect. But thats the thing I do not want to do with my smart devices.

Can you please to run the following command from your MacBook that is attached to Orbi.

Use "Terminal" and run the command traceroute 8.8.8.8.

If you see two private IP addresses listed in the first two hops then you have double NAT.

    Hi 0rb1-user ,

Does smart devices (Kasa switches, Ring cameras, smart lock) connect to base(RBR850) or satellite(RBS850) ?

    Thanks.
