RBKE963 satellite options

I recently installed the Orbi 963 with two satellites in our rather large house. It replaced a Google nest system with 7 pucks that was constantly dropping signal.  The 963 reaches everywhere except a Rachio irrigation controller and a couple of Kasa switches down in a wine cellar. They worked previously with a Google puck in there. Rather than getting one of the pricey 963 satellites to put in there is there another option? Would a satellite from the Orbi 853 or 753 work?

  • Will be interesting to learn if the AX satellites will work with the 960 router.  Because the AX models use 802.11ax for the backhaul link and the original Orbi's used 802.11ac, the original satellites could not sync with the AX routers.  The 960 also uses 802.11ax for the backhaul, so maybe.....???

If that is not possible, then many customers have used simple WiFi extenders, such as the Netgear EX3700  (or even the TP-Link N300)  Those devices do not move and there is no reason for them to be on the same SSID as long as they get connected to the same network and assigned an IP by the 960 router.

  • Unfortunately the 7 and 8 series are not compatible with the 9 series Orbi system.

It seems you should just bite the bullet and add another satellite to your mesh system to provide generic coverage throughout the house.  :-)

Have you already confirmed that the Rachio and Kasa switches are merely out of range vs. have wireless compatibility issues?  I found that the 963's IoT network set to 2.4Ghz worked for most, if not all, my older wireless compatibility devices that struggled with the earlier AX and AC systems.  I even tried setting the IoT network to [TKIP] + [AES] for a bit to maximize compatibility, though it's back to [AES] only right now.
