RBR750 Devices not connecting to satellites, only router

I have an RBR750 and 2x RBS750, all on the latest firmware (4.6.8.5) in a 2600 square foot, 2 story home. RBR and 1xRBS on first floor, 1xRBS on second floor. All RBS are wireless backhaul and more than 30 feet from the router.

There are several spots in my house that are constantly drop wifi signal. I look at the device list and the majority of the devices only connect to the router. I have about 60-70 wifi devices in my home, about 50-60 connect to the router and the rest between the 2 satellites. I know that the router signal is poor when the wifi signal is dropped, because it's at the edge of the property and literally next to where I placed my satellite, yet the device will still try to connect to the router. Channels for 2.4ghz are set to 11, 5ghz at 48 to minimize interference. I've also tried adjusting the wifi power so that it's 50%.

There is something wrong with how the wifi devices connect to the orbi or when it "roams". It feels like I'm using a cell phone and can get dropped signals in between towers or satellites/routers. What's the fix to this?

  • This is nothing to do with Orbi. It's always the mobile device that choose the best AP to connect to according to the wifi standards.

Orbi sends the different signals from the different APs (router and satellites), and the device measures the levels of those signals and should choose the best signal if it supports the requires roaming standards.

Unfotunately, very few devices does that. My iPhone always selects the best AP, but other devices, like my security cameras stick to the AP that it finds live first and looks for another AP only if the first AP is completely lost, not if it finds an AP with better signal.

Then is there something I need to set on my iPhone to help with device selection? There are two corners of the house (where the satellites are) that the iphone will still connect to the router with a decent signal (I can get 500mbps internet speeds) but it will disconnect routinely (go to LTE, IP address is unassigned) and reconnect to back to the router and rarely sometimes to the satellite.

My thermostat for example sees 3 SSIDs for the router and 2x satellites. I'm not sure which one is which.

Is there anyway to set the router to 25% and satellites to 100% power?
