RBR750 ORBI WIFI 6 MESH GOES DOWN AT LEAST MONTHLY

The orbi Wifi 6 RBR 750 (2 satellites) loses internet and goes down at least monthly with magenta light, while my ISP Altice router/modem all-in-one fiber gateway (GR240BG) has internet connection.  The Orbi has the latest firmware v 4.6.14.3 and I have reset the Orbi time to time to default settings.   The wireless internet works when changing to the Altice gateway, but I did notice it didn't work when I plugged desktop via ethernet cable.  It only worked upon power cycling the gateway.

Is the Orbi just naturally temperamental to lose connection time to time to require power cycling, or could it be an issue with the fiber gateway I have?  I am using 5e ethernet cable - would cat 6 make a significant difference?

  • Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

    Couple of options,
    1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
    2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
    3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop
    Try option #2 first...

No, the RBR750 is not "just naturally temperamental".  The Orbi 750 router should remain operational for months and months.  The Altice fiber/router/WiFi device has no idea that there is an Orbi router/WiFi device connected.  All the Altice detects is a single Ethernet connection that seems to be rather busy.

Most home WiFi systems are located within a few feet of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) device.  With that distance, Cat5e cable is perfectly capable of supporting 1GB Ethernet, which is what the RBR750WAN port supports.  Cat5e will support gigabit to 90 meters (a bit under 300 ft). There is certainly no harm in replacing the cable with a more expensive one.  Short Ethernet cables are relatively inexpensive (compared to a bottle of fine wine, for example, which can be "used up" in an hour.)

What appears in the Orbi log when the internet connection fails?  See page 88 of the user manual:

https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RBK752/RBK752_UM_EN.pdf   Resetting the router erases the log file, so you need to look at it before "doing anything" to the router.

Does the web interface "Internet" menu item have a button labelled "TEST" at the top of the page?  The next time the magenta light appears, could you try clicking the Test button before doing anything else?
