RBR850 / RBS850 losing internet connection from Modem
I'm also experiencing disconnections of the RBR850 from the internet, roughly every few days.
Some details:
- The RBR850 is connected to a modem which I know is still providing an internet connection because I have a direct connection from the modem to a computer, and which still functions when the RBR850 loses connectivity. The other hard connection from the modem feeds the RBR850.
- The RBR850 blinks pink when this happens, and then there is no internet signal available to any device in the house from the RBR850
- This of course includes the RBS850 satellite, which sits in another room.
- My firmware is V4.6.3.16_2.0.51. Using the Orbi app, I am not able to upgrade to the latest firmware, which I believe is V4.6.7.13. I have tried multiple times, using the Orbi app on phone, iPad, and through a browser connection on my Mac. But the firmware won't update.
- I have also downloaded this latest firmware and attempted a manual install of the firmware (to the satellite first, as recommended) but the firmware update did not work (procedure returned a notice that the firmware update was not successful). Have tried that multiple times, but no luck.
- Finally, I have considered factory resetting the RBR and RBS, but a bit hesitant as I have seen some that some may have had issues getting system to work after factory reset. If I did go this route, I would be grateful to learn the correct order to do this, if you are running both the RBR850 and RBS850 satellite, and if the Orbi app will take you through the set-up procedure.
Thanks in advance for any help, and apologies if I missed the solution in another post.
Update:
Firmware update worked (manually)
I'm such a dummy.
I didn't realize that there were TWO firmwares, one for the router and one for the satellite.
They are not the same file, and my error message above was because I was trying to install the router firmware update onto the satellite.
Anyways, I downloaded two firmwares, one for router, one for satellite.
I installed the satellite first
Then the router, as recommended.
Both installed, as you can see below.
And now I will wait and see if this fixed the problem of lost internet connectivity. Will let you know.
But please Netgear, we really should not have to go through this to update our firmware and have a stable internet connection. I should be able to do this from the Orbi app.
Thanks for the help of both the experts who contributed above. Really appreciate the goodwill people show in helping others. 🙂

if you can have your router AND a computer connected to your modem, its not just a modem. Its a modem/router combo device. it can cause a double nat. A double nat happens when you cascade more than 1 router.

Fixes? There’s 3 options but only use 1.
1. Put the modem/gateway in modem only/pass through mode. This disables its routing functions.
2. Leave the modem/gateway in router mode but put the Netgears IP address into its DMZ. This forwards the data to the netgear. You can either leave the modem/gateway’s wireless enabled or disabled. Just make sure its using a different wifi channel to prevent interference
3. Put the Netgear into access point mode. This disables its routing functions. Wifi/ethernet still works but it does disable some features.
https://kb.netgear.com/26765/Which-features-are-disabled-on-my-NETGEAR-router-when-it-is-set-to-AP-Modealso, I wouldn't recommend updating over wifi or using the app. When we see corrupt firmware issues, it tends to be from people who updated over wifi or using the app. have you tried doing it with a hardwired in pc/laptop?
Also, one mistake I see is sometimes people trying to use the router firmware on the satellites. Make sure you're using the firmware for the satellites on the satellites (for the manual update)- fontygalGuide
Thanks a lot for your time. Very helpful.
Some quick responses and a follow-up question if you don't mind:
- I always leave the wifi router off on the Modem (which is an Orange Livebox fibre modem...fairly recent), so only one wifi in the house, only from RBR850
- I thought the modem was naturally in bypass mode, once the wifi is off on the Livebox. Have to find that setting on modem to force bypass mode (it's not obvious as I go through the various settings on the modem interface...if you had any clue, thanks.)
- Ideally, for me it's best if the Netgear is the router, as it should be the more capable device compared with ISP modem/router (my hunch). So ideally I would do point 1. below of your suggestions.
Question: will that still allow me to use the modem with a direct line connection to my Mac, as well as the RBR850? It's just very convenient not to have to run another (longer) ethernet cable from the RBR850 back to my Mac.
But there is another reason for it: the service I have is 2GB in total, but that only comes as 1GB per (ethernet) line off modem. So, that means off the back of the modem, I get 1GB to my Mac, and 1GB goes to the Netgear RBR850, to feed through Wifi.
If I only go with one line from the modem to the RBR850, I basically cap the system at 1GB and lose the other 1GB potential from my provider.
You can always put the netgear in access point mode.
that'd achieve your goal of using the modem/gateway and the netgear.
