Re: Orbi RBS750 Firmware Update When Satellite Won't Synch

I spend a lot of time on this issue with my new Satellite.

I believe my mistakes were:

  1. Did not take other Satellites offline when adding the new Satellite
  2. Did not bring the Satellite to the same room where the Router was
  3. Did not update the new Satellilte's firmware before adding it to the Router
  4. Router needed to be factory reset
  5. IP Addresses were not restricted to 192.168.1.100-200

Here are the steps that resolved the issue for me:

  1. Turn off and bring Satellites to the same room as the router
  2. Turn off Router
  3. Reboot modem
  4. Reset Router
    1. Insert paper clip into reset hole for 5+ seconds
    2. Use Orbi Mobile App to set up Router
  5. Use orbilogin.com to access router web site and
    1. Configure LAN start IP address to 192.168.1.100
    2. Configure LAN end IP address to 192.168.1.200
    3. Apply updates
  6. Turn off all wifi devices in your house
    1. FYI Devices IP Addresses need to be reallocated to new address range
  7. Download and unzip the latest firmware

  8. Enable TFTP in Windows Optional Features if not already enabled

  9. Download and install npcap (accept installation defaults) - dependency of nmrpflash.
    1. https://npcap.com/#download
  10.  Download and unzip nmrpflash
    1. https://github.com/jclehner/nmrpflash/releases/tag/v0.9.22
  11. Copy nmrpflash to the same folder as the firmware
  12. Turn off the Router
  13. Connect the satellite to your machine via Ethernet port 1 (farthest from power)
  14. Open the command prompt as an Administrator
  15. Construct nmrpflash command with satellite's MAC Address in the Command window e.g.
    1. nmrpflash -i net8 -f RBS750-V7.2.6.31.chk -m 80:CC:00:29:00:14
  16. Run the nmrpflash command
  17. Power on the Satellite
  18. Firmware will be transferred to Satellite and Power LED will blink Amber
  19. Reboot Satellite if firmware transferred successfully
  20. Turn on the Modem and wait for it to boot successfully
  21. Turn on the Router and wait for it to boot successfully
  22. Use orbilogin.com to access Router web site and
    1. Add the Satellite
    2. Ensure Satellite syncs and backhaul status is good
  23. Repeat steps 12-12 for any Satellites that aren't working

  • I added a new alien RBS850 to my existing RBK853 last year. System was already at v.21.
I don't rmemeber exactly the FW that was on the incoming RBS. I believe I did have the RBR online alone with all other RBS turned OFF. Same room with incoming RBS. I believe I let the incoming RBS come to it's ready state and ya, did didn't auto connect. I believe I then pressed the sync button on the RBS and then used the Add Satellite feature on the RBR web page and I believe it did sync for me. I was able to then access it web page long enough to get the new v.21 FW loaded and applied.

Another option to try is to ethernet connect the RBS to the back of the RBR and see if the RBS gets an IP address. Usually it will and you can log into it then using RBR log in or admin/password. Then manually update.

Another option to check is wire connect 1 PC to the back of the RBS. Factory reset the RBS, wait about 5 minutes. The PC will get a IP address from the satellite📡. The RBS will be 192.168.1.250 for Orbi AC/192.168.10.250 for Orbi AX. Use this IP address in a web browser to log in to the satellites web page. Log in as admin and password. Use the satellites 📡 web page FW update feature to select the FW update file that was unpacked from the .zip file. Then factory reset and then re-sync the satellites 📡 to the RBR.

You don't need to factory reset or change the default IP address pool range for this.

Sounds like worse case method though that NMRP option worked. Good to know.

Glad you got it working. Please mark your thread as solved so others will know. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.
