When two Ethernet adapters are connected with a cable, they perform an operation known as Autonegotiation:

This function is built into the actual Ethernet adapter hardware and cannot be affected by the user.
The most common reasons for an Ethernet link negotiating 100Mbps rather than 1000Mbps (gigabit) are
- The Ethernet cable has a 'problem'.
- One of the tiny gold wires in the Ethernet sockets (modem and router) is bent or out of alignment.
The most common step is to
- Get another Ethernet cable, preferably Cat 5e or Cat6, and
- Visually inspect the Ethernet sockets before plugging in the cable.
