Using VPN Service

I am attempting to setup a VPN service through my Orbi. I currently have everything setup on the Orbi, and have downloaded the profile to my phone (which is not the most user-friendly thing -- just saying). However, my phone cannot connect to the VPN. It continues to timeout.

My setup is this: I have a modem for my cable internet. Connected directly to that is a Linksys router. That router is acting as the DNS for my Orbi. This allows me to keep my work computer (which is connected directly to the Linksys) off my home network for security reasons (required by my work).

Since Orbi is getting the internet from the Linksys router, do I need to do anything as far as port forwarding or anything? Anyone with a similar setup that has successfully setup the VPN, please let me know!

Thanks,

Duane

  • Your intuition is totally correct.  The Linksys router will block OpenVPN connections and thus the Orbi router will never see anything and the connection attempt will time out.  The obvious solutions are (1) to remove the Linksys router or (2) to run OpenVPN on the Linksys router and put the Orbi in Access Point mode.

It appears that your personal needs and the company's needs are in conflict.

What Orbi system model do you have?

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

If you have a router in front of the Orbi router, this would be a double NAT condition and would cause problems.

Either change the Orbi system to AP modem or remove the Linksys router from the mix.
