VPN connection with Orbi RBR350

How can I determine if my router is capable or supports VPN products please

  • Every VPN requires two parts:

    • A VPN host which accepts connections over an encrypted (secure) link and then does something with the communications that are received, such as forward them to sites on the internet. and
    • VPN Clients which makes secure connections to the host and uses that communication link for some purpose(s)

Netgear routers have a feature to enable the router as a VPN host which will accept connections from clients on the internet and allow those clients access to the router Local Area Network (LAN).  This is based on a version of OpenVPN that is part of the router firmware.

When devices on the LAN load Client VPN software (such as NordVPN, Express VPN, Proto VPN, etc.) they can make connections to VPN hosts on the internet.  All Netgear routers allow these connections.  (In truth, the home router has no idea what devices are doing when they make encrypted connections to the internet.  It's encrypted. So it's hidden.)

There are some routers (not from Netgear) which have the capability to make the router itself into a VPN client that encrypts the communication from every device on the network into a tunnel that connects with one of those VPN hosts on the internet.  Netgear routers do not support that capability.

      Hi

      Thanks

      for the info

I have enabled the VN on the orbi router with open vpn

But cannot seam to get surfshark to operate directly with the router so all devices on the router go through this VPN supplier

      Any thoughts ?
