Wifi 6 Orbi Worth It?

Hello everyone, I am trying to decide whether the Orbi RBK852 system would be worth it for my use case. At the moment I am using an Orbi Wifi 3 pack AC2200 (I can't remember the name) system with an outdoor satellite added on. Would I be able to see a noticeable improvement switching to Wifi 6? At the moment I have many devices that support Wifi 6 and was thinking of upgrading to get a boost. For reference I have 30+ devices connected.

  • It would be an improvement over the Orbi AC system you have.

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR📡 and RBS🛰️ to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

  • Things to consider:

    • If the internet connection is in the 200-400Mbps range, changing to WiFi6 is not likely to make a perceptible difference. If the ISP connection is very fast, then the maximum possible speed of WiFi6 may enable slightly faster connection speeds, but whether you will be able to notice a difference is another matter.  For example, a movie requires a certain bandwidth to play smoothly.  Faster bandwidth will not make the movie "better".  Yes, a web page may load in 2.3 seconds instead of 2.5 seconds.  Will you notice the difference?
    • If there were zero WiFi6 devices, the answer would almost certainly be "no".  Devices that do not support WiFi6 will remain unchanged.  Those WiFi6 are the only devices that can possibly take advantage of WiFi6. What are these devices used for?
    • That outdoor satellite, which may be an RBS50Y, will not operate as a "satellite" with the Orbi WiFi6 products.  The WiFi backhaul link in the RBS50Y is not compatible with the backhaul link in the WiFi6 products.  If it is the RBS50Yv2,then it can be put into "Extender Mode" and continue to service outside areas, but devices will not roam seamlessly between the rBS50Y and the new system as they do with the existing system. (If it is the original RBS50Y, then it will simply cease to function.)

If the Extender mode FW is loaded on the RBSY, then it should continue to work with the Orbi AX Systems just as a extender is all. Won't be seen as a satellite.
