Orbi 371 system: mac can't connect to printer

Update: the macbook air is back to not printing. Ping is totally inconsistent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it times out every packet.
If I set a static IP address on the macbook Air, won't that mean it is only good if I am on the home network? That's not helpful as my wife brings her laptop everywhere. She needs DHCP to work.
I did set the channels to 11 and 48. No apparent change.
