Orbi RBE873 - Missing Attached Devices After Reboot or Power Loss

Continuation of reddit discusion:

Hey everyone,
I recently upgraded from an RBK353 (which worked flawlessly) to the RBE873, and I’m running into a recurring issue.

After a factory reset, everything works fine — full device list, solid performance. But after a few reboots (manual or due to power loss), the system stops showing connected devices properly, both in the web interface and the Orbi app.

Here’s what happens:

  • One satellite (connected via Ethernet) shows up normally with an IP in the "Attached Devices" list.
  • The second satellite (wireless backhaul) shows up with IP 0.0.0.0. However, if I manually enter its previous IP in a browser, I can access its local admin page — it shows a proper link to the main router, an IP address, and even a list of client devices connected to it.
  • The main "Attached Devices" view in the app or web GUI reports that I have 13 devices connected, but only 9 are listed — and I actually have around 25 devices online. For example, my phone is connected and working fine on the network, but it doesn’t appear in the list.

I’m running firmware V10.5.19.4_1.1.27, and no updates are shown as available.

A reboot doesn’t fix the issue — only a full factory reset and fresh setup resolves it temporarily. But after a few more restarts, the problem comes back.

Anyone else seeing something similar or found a fix?

Answer from furrynutz (was that you FURRYe38 ?):

What browser are you using when viewing the RBRs web page? Happens in other browsers?

What mobile platform are you using for Orbi app?

How many devices do you have connected?

Which devices seem missing after the reboot or power loss?

Have you given a long period of time for the devices to re-appear?

-

How was the Fw updated on the system? RBS first then RBR lastly?

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

-

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?

What is the distance between the router 📡 and satellite(s)🛰️? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR 📡 and RBS 🛰️ to begin with depending upon building materials when wired or wirelessly connected.

Does this happen with the RBS turned OFF?

Does this happen with both wireless and wired devices?

What channel configurations are currently set on the router?

Be sure to disable any MAC Address randomizers on phones and pads while at home: https://community.netgear.com/kb/en-orbi-knowledge-sharing/netgear-mobile-applications-and-androidapplewindows-devices-faq/2457046

Try disabling the following and see:

Armor, Smart Parental Controls or Circle, IPv6, Traffic Meter.

And me again - that message was shadodbanned:

Wow, thanks for the detailed response! Here's the info:

  • Browser: Chrome on Windows and Chrome on Android
  • Mobile platform: Android
  • Connected devices: Around 25 total — 7 via Ethernet, 18 on WiFi (mostly 2.4GHz IoT devices)
  • Missing devices: -- For example, three phones (Galaxy S25 Ultra, Pixel 7, iPhone 16 Pro), one tablet (Tab S8+), and several WiFi light bulbs — all of which are connected to WiFi and working fine, but not shown in the device list
  • Time after power loss: -- After the last factory reset, everything was working fine until yesterday -- There was a power outage around midday. Now, over 30 hours later, the Orbi app still shows only 11 devices -- At the same time, a network scan with WiFiMan shows 25 active devices -- Previously, I waited three days without improvement and ended up doing another factory reset
  • Firmware update: I performed the update automatically during the initial setup. I didn’t monitor the update order between satellites and the router, but the firmware version is the same across all units
  • ISP modem: It's a Halny fiber router from my ISP, with WiFi disabled. My previous Orbi RBK353 worked perfectly with it for years
  • Cable: The ISP device and the RBE873 router are connected using a Cat6 cable
  • Home size: ~120 m² (approx. 1290 sq ft)
  • Satellite placement: -- One satellite is wired and located about 7m / 23ft from the router, separated by a reinforced concrete slab and one thick masonry wall -- The second satellite (wireless backhaul) is ~10m / 33ft away, also through a thick masonry wall -- The main router is in the middle
  • With satellites turned off: I haven’t tried running the system with the satellites turned off yet — I can test that
  • Wired vs wireless: The issue seems to affect only wireless devices — wired ones always show up correctly
  • MAC randomization: Disabled on all Android phones and tablets while at home
  • Features disabled: -- Armor: off -- Smart Parental Controls: off -- IPv6: off (not supported by ISP) -- Traffic Meter: off
  • Access Control: Enabled, but set to default mode — allow all new devices

One more thing - I turned off Acces Control, but that changed nothing.

So, yesterday I was working with a few electric devices at my home, so I had a few power cycles on the whole home, including Orbi. Today, the Orbi app and web UI show 13 devices, but about 23 are connected at the moment (wired and wireless) - it's not showing my phone or tablet, which are definitely connected and have access to the Internet.

A few items that I'm picking out.

    1. For that size of home, having the RBR and two RBS deployed is too much. Will cause problems with over saturation of wifi signals and too much wifi over lap between the units. Please turn OFF one RBS for now to test with the RBR only: https://youtu.be/UR0viMLISz4
    2. Concrete and steel will be problematic for any wireless MESH system. Having one RBS wired will help on this one.
    3. What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and 40 to 48 channel on 5Ghz.
    4. How was the FW updated on the system? Automatic from NG or manually by downloading the FW files and applying them to each device?
    5. What wifi security modes are you using? Mixed Mode WPA2 and WPA3?
    6. How is the wired RBS ethernet connected to the RBR? Directly behind the RBR or is there a LAN switch or LAN patch panel in between?

If your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended regardless if wifi is disabled on the gateway. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
    https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
    Couple of options,
    1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
    2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
    3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router.
