Got the issue fixed. A nice, knowledgeable technician came out and after checking lines and my modem, everything looked good. But, for some reason, the Xfinity app on my phone kept looking for something it could not find and thought I was offline (which I definitely was not). Turns out I had to "activate" the modem so, even though everything else could see the internet, the app could not. After activating, everything seems to be working normally. Thought I did this with the automated install of the Orbi system since I was connected to the 'net. But, guess not. Everything good now. Thanks to all for their comments.

I have found that contacting Technical Support (from any company) often depends on the capability of the agent.
(I once went through 8 hours of frustration with a technician on site replacing equipment over and over, only to have the last person I called say, "oh. your account is coded wrong. please try it again."
Used up an entire day of this poor guy's life, for no reason.)
The person you got on the phone may not have understood that the only equipment provided by Xfinity might by the MB8611 modem (or is it yours?).
It might be useful to ask, "how do I check the status of my modem?"
