AX80 alternate DNS problem

When logged in to the router I tried to specify an alternate DNS in the internet settings, but when I click "Apply" the page refreshes and reverts to using the ISP's DNS. I called Netgear support and they said the ISP is probably preventing the use of alternate DNS. I then called my ISP (Cox) who told me they do not block or prevent alternate DNS.

Has anybody else experienced this? Is it possible my router is defective?

  • Not defective, just buggy firmware on your undefined version. Christian_R some action required here.

PS. Hhve requested moving your thread to the Nighthawk Routers With WiFi 6 (AX) section.

Thanks for that reply. As it turns out, it wasn't just changing alternate DNS that wasn't working, the router was not letting me change pretty much any setting that had I had already configured, and pressing the reset button to restore factory settings didn't help either, it just rebooted the router with the same settings. Ditto using the "erase" function when logged in, it just wouldn't erase or reset anything.

Therefore I called Netgear again and they agreed to send me a replacement for exchange. That is good, except that if it is really buggy firmware and not a defective unit then I'm apprehensive that the replacement equipment will have the same problem. I'll find out next week when the new one comes, I guess.
