Netgear AX5400 issues with My Passport
I upgraded from my old Netgear R7000 router, the the new AX5400 router. Setup was a royal pain, did not go well, but after calling support and a couple of hours I finally got it to work. One issue I am having, is using my WD My Passport hard drive. It worked flawlessly on the old R7000 router, but when I plug it into the USB port on the AX5400, my internet connection will drop and the light will stay steady. It is still connected, but I cannot connect to the 192.198.1.1 site.
If I reboot the the router and leave the My Passport unhooked then it works fine. If I reboot the router with the My Passport connected, then it won't have an internet connection.
I verified theat the My Passport works by just plugging it into my laptop, and it is just fine.
Any ideas on what is going on?

Which router is that? RAX something or other?
AX5400 is not a unique Netgear model number. Many devices come with the AC/AX tag, but it is essentially a label that Netgear, and others, attach to hardware to describe wifi speeds.
Look at the label on the device for the Model Number. And, if there is one, include the "V" bit to show the hardware version. If there is no V number, then you have V1.
I assume that you have set up ReadySHARE in the new router.
What firmware version do you have on the device?
A number is more useful than "the latest". There may be newer versions, or "hot fixes", that do not show up if you check for new firmware in the browser interface.
If there is one it might also help if you told people the make and model number of the modem/gateway/ONT that sits between this router and the Internet. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?
I ask because a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.By the way, if you still have the R7000, you could still use that. Put it into AP mode and use it for the USB drives.
How do I change my NETGEAR router to AP mode? | Answer | NETGEAR Support
You can turn off the wifi if it gets in the way of the main router. Press the wifi on/off switch on the front.

The new router is an RAX50v2
Firmware version v1.1.3.18
App Version 2.32.0.3389
Readyshare is set up on the router
The USB light does come on when the My Passport is connected, and the internet connection goes solid blue and there is no internet connection.
Modem is a Arris Surfboard Docis 3

Your first move should be to update the firmware to the latest version:
RAX50v2 Firmware Version 1.1.4.28 - NETGEAR Support
It came out last November.
Modem is a Arris Surfboard Docis 3That could be one of a number of devices. Most of them are simple modems, but that description could also cover a few modem/routers.
I can't see why adding a USB drive should shut out the Internet, beyond the possibility that the drive is draining too much current from the USB port on the RAX50v2.
Which WD My Passport hard drive is this? One with its own power? How big is it?
Does the same thing happen with other USB storage?
