Not getting full gigabit speeds with Netgear Nighthawk AX5400

Upgraded to Xfinity 1000 Mbps/35 Mbps plan recently. Had comcast guy fix the connection and could reach 900 Mbps from the modem (Arris T25 with Docsis 3.1) directly.

Old router from Linksys ES8500, wifi speed got 524 Mbps/41 Mbps.

Switched to Nighthawk RAX50 AX5400:

Ethernet direct to PC, speed around 280 Mbps DL

Wifi from iphone 227 Mbps/41 Mbps

Qos off

Traffic Meter off

Firmware Version V1.0.2.64_2.0.41

Just wonder why it cuts the speed so much.

  • Have you tried testing directly off the modem yourself?

Another thing to try is factory reset the router and then set it up with default settings and speed test it. If it hits full speed, then try making changes.

What website are you uing for testing?

Make sure to test over a hardwired connection.

      Thanks for the reply.

I used the same PC connected to modem to get the speed, speedtest.xfinity.com, and with hardwired connection.

The netgear router is a new installation, I only added some port forwarding.

And what speed do you get hardwired directly into modem?
I still recommend the factory reset/reinstall (not from backup).

Reason why is the RAX devices were released before the AX spec was even finalized. So they recieved quite significant firmware updates. This makes them respond very favorably to a full factory reset after the firmware changes. And if it was new and auto-updated, it might help.

so try the full factory reset and then test with by instalilng with the default configuration.
